Zealong’s Own Grey offers a more subtle and delicate take on the traditional Earl Grey. Crafted with Zealong’s premium black tea, this blend features a harmonious combination of organic bergamot peel (instead of the essential oil typically used in Earl Greys), red rose petals, jasmine, lavender, and lemon myrtle, creating a beautifully balanced and nuanced flavor profile.
Unlike the bold and oil-infused flavor of conventional Earl Greys, Zealong’s Own Grey delivers a softer, more natural essence of citrus and floral notes, making it a refined experience for those who appreciate a lighter and more elegant cup. Perfect for sipping on its own or paired with your favorite treat, this is a blend that highlights Zealong’s dedication to clean, organic ingredients and exceptional quality.
The Heritage collection is a unique take of the best-loved brews from around the world blended the Zealong way with all-organic ingredients.
Zealong's hand-picked teas offer a premium flavor and nutrient profile. Certified organic and cultivated in the renowned Waikato region on New Zealand's North Island, the colder environment forces the flavor and nutrients into the newest growth, which Zealong meticulously harvests by hand-picking only the top three leaves. These award-winning teas are free from artificial flavors, oils, or additives.
Available in loose-leaf or tea bags, with the latter made from non-GMO, renewable plant sources, the tea bags are 100% food-safe, non-toxic, and compostable under the right conditions.
Each pack is fully traceable to the date and block it was picked. The state-of-the-art processing facilities adhere to a strict HACCP ISO22000 food safety regime, eliminating risk of contamination and free from harmful chemicals.

This tea is not the powder you would get at the grocery store. It's the actual leaves they pick which adds more purity to the taste. Being a premium tea, I think it's worth the cost which is actually per cup, pretty reasonable.
Rick, thank you so much for this! You are absolutely right - these are whole, hand-picked leaves, not the dust and fannings you find in most grocery store tea. The difference in how and where teas are grown, picked, and processed makes a HUGE difference when it comes to purity and taste, and I love that it came through so clearly for you.
And I couldn't agree more on the value. When you break it down per cup, a truly premium, single-estate tea is one of the most affordable little luxuries out there. :)
Thank you for taking the time to share this - I am very grateful!
Love the taste of this tea and that it is organic, however it is quite expensive. It will be an occasional splurge for me. I also purchased the Earl Grey but haven’t tried it yet.
Pat, thank you so much for the kind words - we're so glad you're enjoying the Black Tea and are excited for you to try the Zealong's Own Grey!
We completely understand the 'occasional splurge' feeling, and we think that's actually a lovely way to enjoy it. Because the tea is grown on a single certified organic estate in New Zealand, hand-picked, and processed and packaged in an ISO22000 facility, the cost of production is higher.
The most economical way to enjoy Zealong is with the 200g pouches, which contain approximately 100 cups - making the per-cup cost under a dollar, which might just make it a little easier to justify as an everyday ritual!
Thanks again for sharing your experience. We're so glad you're enjoying the tea!
Much too flowery and not enough Earl Grey. Didn't care for the taste.
Hi Doyle,
Thanks so much for your feedback, and I’m so sorry this blend didn’t hit the mark for you. Zealong’s Own Grey is definitely a unique take on the traditional Earl Grey, and we understand that it can be quite different from what many are used to.
Because Zealong is committed to producing the cleanest cup possible, they’ve chosen not to use bergamot essential oil (which is often used in conventional Earl Greys) and instead use organic bergamot peel for a more natural citrus essence. That said, you’re not alone in your feedback, and Zealong is looking at how to bring the citrus notes out a bit more - making it more similar to the traditional Earl Grey.
Thank you again for giving it a try. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like a recommendation—we’d love to help you find a blend you really enjoy.
I’m returning my order of Earl Grey because the tea is not a traditional Earl Grey. The recipe has been changed “by combining bergamot peel, rose petals, jasmine, lavender, lemon Myrtle and peppermint.” They gave a sample to try before opening my large loose leaf bag and I did not like it. I don’t understand why you would change the ingredients and still call it E.G?. Why not have an E.G. and call this new blend something else?
Hi Clare,
Thank you so much for your honest feedback and for giving Zealong’s Own Grey a try.
You’re absolutely right—Zealong’s Own Grey is quite different from traditional Earl Grey teas. Zealong made a conscious choice to steer clear of essential oils and artificial flavors in all of their blends. Instead of using Bergamot essential oil (which is traditionally used in Earl Grey), they opted for organic Bergamot peel along with a harmonious blend of rose petals, jasmine, lavender, lemon myrtle, and peppermint to create a more delicate and nuanced flavor profile.
That’s also why they named it “Zealong’s Own Grey” instead of “Earl Grey,” as it’s truly a unique twist on the classic. I completely understand, though, how that could be confusing if you were expecting the more traditional Earl Grey flavor!
I really appreciate your feedback on the naming as well—it's something I'll be sure to pass along to the team. Thank you again for giving us a try and I'm sorry it didn't work out for you.
I had this tea at a hotel we stayed in while visiting New Zealand. Really loved the taste but had a difficult time finding it. Glad to see it on your website. Would prefer teabags , but loose is OK. A bit expensive, but great taste.
Hi Pamela,

It really is such a unique and delicate take on a classic Earl Grey, and I’m thrilled that you were able to find it here at Taria.
I also wanted to let you know that we will be getting more Zealong’s Own Grey in tea bags soon! I know that can make enjoying your tea even more convenient, so stay tuned for an update.
